Hammer strikes and fine dynamics

Institute of Piano is tuned specifically for piano listening. It focuses on the attack of the hammer striking the string, and the overtones and resonance that follow, with the aim of conveying changes in touch and playing force.

Across the piano’s wide tonal range, fine dynamic changes and clear spatial contours are key tuning priorities. The design seeks to preserve the relationship between the initial strike, the resonance and the movement of a musical phrase.

For dedicated instrument listening

The Institute Series is intended for researchers of instrumental music, professional musicians and music practitioners, and dedicated enthusiasts. Piano and Violin each place the sound of one instrument at the centre of their design and tuning.

This focused approach involves trade-offs in how other music is presented. We recommend choosing each model primarily for dedicated listening to its corresponding instrument, with that specialised purpose in mind.

Driver design

Piano uses the in-house Brilbell (Carbon Wind Chime) driver, tuned with particular attention to piano attack and fine dynamic changes.

Construction and materials

The Institute Series builds on Basic with tuning dedicated to individual instruments. Both models use brass and enamel faceplates.
